The information accompanying this photo was given simply as Two Women Outside Family Home, East Melbourne, 1918.

The house can be identified as one of four in Canterbury Terrace, Powlett Street, either numbers 86, 90, 102 or 106.

George Robertson of Melbourne 1825-1898 Pioneer Bookseller & Publisher

A biography of George Robertson of Melbourne. (Not to be confused with George Robertson of Sydney (1860-1933.)  Robertson arrived in Melbourne aboard the Great Britain in 1852. He quickly opened a shop in Russell Street before moving to Collins Street, between the Athenaeum and the Baptist Church.

Firefighter's funeral 1968

On the 2 March 1968 a grass fire broke out in Alphington, near Melbourne.  Two fireman, Sub-Station Officer Gordon Bruce Adams, and Senior Fireman Eric Jamieson, suffered severe burns.  Both later died in hospital.  Jamieson on 3 March and Adams on 23 March.

Anzac Day 1970. Roy Brockfield leads Metropolitan Fire Brigade contingent

Roy Brockfield is seen leading the Metropolitan Fire Brigade contingent at the Anzac Day parade in 1970.  He was chosen to lead as he was by then the only surviving WWI veteran in the MFB. Brockfield worked at the Eastern Hill Fire Station for 45 years, many of them as foreman of the workshops.

The property has a long history as a guesthouse/private hotel and is noted as a place where visiting stage performers would stay.  Since then it has become run down.  A planning permit for an upgrade has been granted, however work has not started and the property is on the market.

Robert Outhwaite: His Diary and the Painting of the Stag

Robert Outhwaite was a passenger on the Stag, the same ship which in 1847 brought to Melbourne its first bishop, Charles Perry, and his wife, Frances.  Frances Perry wrote about the voyage in her journals, in his diary Outhwaite gives another view.

Myra Sutton, the donor of the collection, was on the committee of the East Melbourne Group and there are some items which relate to the work of the EMG, such as correspondence, newspaper clippings and flyers.
