Memories of Bims Restaurant

Wendy Pomroy's memories of Bims and Vagn Ove Gunness and their restaurant, Bims at 366 Albert Street.   Previously the pair had taken over Mirka, Mirka Mora's restaurant in the city, which they renamed Danish Delight.

On 21 April 2021 historian, Alicia Cerreto, took us on a journey through the history of Berry Street. Initially known as the Victorian Infant Asylum and Foundling Hospital it has had many name changes since.

A collection of photos taken just prior to the demolition of Cliveden Mansions which once stood on the corner of Wellington Parade and Clarendon Street, East Melbourne.  The house was demolished to make way for the Hilton on the Park, now the Pullman Hotel.  It is pictured devoid of all furniture and furnishings which had been sold at auction in the previous weeks.

Cliveden Album

An album of a collection of material relating to the home of Sir William Clarke, Cliveden, 192 Wellington Parade, which was demolished in 1968 to make way for the Hilton Hotel.  Items include copies of original plans, copies of photos of elaborately furnished interiors and copies of contemporary news reports.

Video of Channel Nine News report on 25 August 2021. The Channel Nine news team appeared at the East Melbourne General Store to report on the 130th anniversary of Allen's Lollies. Audrey Major observed that customers for Allen's lollies are often adults seeking a nostalgia hit. Alex Spiro, a passing customer, mentioned that his father-in-law was once chief confectioner for Allen's.

No Glory in the Saga of the Wren Family Feud

Newspaper cutting about Jenny Kurg, grand-daughter of John Wren, infamous entrepreneur, and family feud.

Jenny and her new partner, David Anthony (Tony) Woods, artist, lived in East Melbourne, with their children.  From about 1971 they lived at 52 Gipps Street which was orignally two houses, 50 and 52. In 1979 Jenny bought Halloween at 99 Hotham Street.

Video of presentation by Dr Fay Woodhouse on Robert Russell, artist of early Melbourne

On 20 October 2021 Dr Fay Woodhouse gave a Zoom presentation to the Society about Robert Russell, artist of early Melbourne. Robert Russell was the first surveyor general of Melbourne and spent a lifetime recording the growth of the settlement in drawings and paintings. He lived at what is now 49 George Street, East Melbourne and the adjoining lane is now named after him.
