Walking Tour of East Melbourne 1982

A brochure with the title Walking Tour of East Melbourne.  It was devised and written by Winston H Burchett, and published in 1982 for the National Trust of Victoria in association with the East Melbourne Group.  It provides a map with the subject buildings marked by numbers.  The numbers correspond to short histories of the marked buildings.

Victorian Historical Journal May 1979

Essays on various aspects of Victoria's history.  Includes article by W (Winston) Burchett, 'The Planning of East Melbourne'.  The article starts with discussion of the earliest plans for subdivision by Robert Hoddle and Robert Russell in 1837 to the 1881 subdivision of the north east corner of Yarra Park.

Historical Sketch of 179 Gipps Street, East Melbourne as understood in August 1971

A typescript document recording the history of the property at 179 Gipps Street by its then owner and occupier, Winston H Burchett.  The history starts with the earliest land grant to the Church of England of the entire block.  This was later revised and the land released for public sale. The history continues in some detail until 1971.

Two houses:  the two-storey one on the left was built in 1909 in the garden of the three storey house on the right which was built in 1873. For over fifty years they were together known as Wellpark, a boarding house or guest house. Later one became a restaurant and the other was converted to offices. They remain on the one title.

Early Melbourne Paintings

Catalogue of an exhibition of early Melbourne paintings on loan from various institutions but mainly from the Roy Morgan Research Centre Collection.The exhibiton was held first at Morgans 401, 401 Collins Street, Melbourne and later at Government House.

All works are illustrated in colour and illustrate Melbourne's earliest days from 1840 to 1906.

1857 Design for Fitzroy Square by E L Bateman

A plan showing the proposed design for the laying out of the Fitzroy Gardens by Edward La Trobe Bateman. The plan was commissioned by the City of Melbourne. The Age of 1 Jun 1858 reported on a Council meeting the previous day in which it was agreed, after some debate, to pay Bateman £100 for his work, which also included a plan for the Carlton Gardens.

A colour photo shows a two storey building of clinker brick.  It is rigidly symmetrical and with twelve-paned windows placed evenly across the facade has a classical appearance. A small hint of Art Deco style is created by the motif at the roof line marking the centre point, and also by the stylised lettering on the side wall.

Proposed Presbyterian Intermediate Hospital - East Melbourne

Fund raising for the new Presbyterian Intermediate Hospital in East Melbourne began in 1930. This small flyer encouraged children to raise funds for their own section of the hospital.  Ways to raise money were suggested and it was hoped that every boy and girl would be able to earn £1 toward the appeal.

Treasury Square - Gas and Fuel-style debacle looms

A newpaper clipping giving commentary on the proposed development of the newly named Treasury Square.  This is land is currently owned by VicTrack and is on the boundary between East Melbourne and the City and is at the junction of Flinders Street, Spring Street and Wellington Parade. The writer, Dr James Lesh, makes a strong case against the development.

Real estate article which gives some of the history of the house.  It was built in 1872 for Robert Jacomb by William Rankin. It was to be auctioned on 19 December 1987 by agents Eric Weber.  It was presumably passed in as Domain property sales states the sale was by private treaty the same month.  The price reached was $570,000.
