We of the Never-Never with a Memoir by Margaret Berry

This edition of the book contains a memoir about Mrs Gunn by her niece, Margaret Berry.  Mrs Aeneas Gunn lived for many years at 179 George Street, East Melbourne with her two sisters, Lizzie Taylor and Carrie Templeton. Photos

The photo shows a single fronted two storey house with cast iron verandah.  It was built 1868 for Howard Willoughby, editor of The Argus. In this photo John Donaldson, donor’s great grand-father, stands at the front gate with a dog.

The photo shows a large two storey, double fronted house with a cast iron verandah.  Although it is hard to see, the accompanying detail from the MMBW plan of 1898 shows the windows to the right hand side of the photo to be bay windows.

My Grandmother's Secret

Author, Kath McKay, writes about the legal case surrounding the rape of her grandmother, Ethel Wilkinson, as a nine year old child in 1895.  The accused rapist was Edwin Worrall, a family friend who looked after Ethel and her two brothers while Harry Wilkinson, their father, a sole parent, was at work.

Dame Beryl Beaurepaire (1923-2018)

Obituary for Dame Beryl Beaurepaire.  Dame Beryl was of the Bedggood family of shoe manufacturers whose factory was in Jolimont.  She and her husband, Ian, had 124 Powlett Street as their town house during the 1970s.

Cricket in Long Skirts: Women's Cricket 1905-1916

A history of the first eleven years of women's cricket as an organised competition. The Victorian Ladies' Cricket Association was formed in 1905. This ceased to function after the 1915-16 season largely due to the war and the need for women to expend their energies elsewhere.  A new association was formed in 1924 - The Victorian Women's Cricket Association.

The Wisewould Chronicles

Reopening of St Peter's Plaza Eastern Hill

On 10 November,  St Peter’s Plaza and the restored ‘Cross of Sacrifice’ were re-opened to the public. Dating from 1924, the cross is a memorial to the fallen soldiers of World War 1, modelled on wayside crosses in France and is the only one of its kind in Australia.

Reminiscences of East Melbourne

Typed transcript of a meeting held by the East Melbourne Historical Society on 16 April 2003. The event entailed Alan Basham chairing a panel of six long term residents of East Melbourne who, in turn, spoke of their memories of living in the area.  Memories included stories of decrepit houses, neighbours, changing streetscapes and personal anecdotes.
