A memoir in the which the author, Virginia Hill, recounts her experience as a child of the British Raj sent away to board at Melbourne's Merton Hall at the age of five.  It was an unhappy experience, and although the story has nothing to do with East Melbourne directly it highlights earlier attitudes to child raising generally, and in particular the question of education over family life.
