East Melbourne, Fitzroy Gardens old kiosk

Photo shows the old kiosk in the Fitzroy Gardens in the 1950s.  Originally built in 1908 with an octagonal bandstand at the corner which has been built in.  At the entrance is a weighing machine which a customer could use by inserting a penny in the slot provided.

In 1915 the East Melbourne Historical Society, led by Janet Scarfe, researched the lives and work of nurses who served in WW1 and who had a connection with East Melbourne and Jolimont. Their stories and accompanying images were published on our website and are searchable under their individual names.

East Melbourne Housing Classifications - review 2000

In 2000 the City of Melbourne initiated a review of property classifications in East Melbourne.  The proposal was to remove all the properties from the Heritage Inventory which had a grading of E or F.  In the future the Inventory would only include four levels of classification, from A to D.

Journalist, Stewart Cockburn, writes of doing up his house in East Melbourne in 1950.  The address of the house is not given but has been identified as 121 Gipps Street. Cockburn shortly afterwards became Robert Menzies' press-secretary. A photo of the front of the house shows that the ground floor verandah then had a wooden frieze, which has since been replaced.

Three brothers: William, Joseph and James Baxter c.1890

A portrait photo of three men.  They are brothers, William, Joseph and James Baxter.  Joseph Baxter (1839-1918) was the builder and first owner of the house at 121 Gipps Street, East Melbourne.

The photo was taken c.1890 at the studio of Barroni & Co., 109 Elizaebth Street, Melbourne, nr. Bourke Street.

An article explaining the benefits of repurposing old, out of date terraces.  In this instance the terraces have been converted to six flats, each with four rooms.  The architect was PJW Murfett.  Before and after illustrations.

The building now operates as a bed and breakfast accommodation.

Spotted Pardalote in Agnes Street, Jolimont

Spotted Pardalote observed in Agnes Street, Jolimont on 26 July 2022. An extremely noisy demolition was taking place a couple of houses down and the bird seemed very agitated. Its call could not be recorded above the noise. A few days later it was found in same cottage garden but flew next door into a bushy garden.

A photographic postcard published by Valentine's. V58

It shows four brick terrace houses. They were built in 1908-1910 for Sir Austin Chapman (1864-1926). In the 1950s the two on the right, nos 64-66, were modernised and given new facades of concrete breeze blocks.  These same two were demolished in the 1980s to make way for apartments. Now only the two on the left remain.

The image shows the old kiosk in the Fitzroy Gardens as it appeared when first built. A history of the building can be found using the link below. It was demolished in 1963 to make way for the current building known as The Pavillion.

This is a colour postcard of the Fitzroy Gardens c.1905. It was printed in Prussia as part of the Victoria Stamp Market (VSM) Series.

Australia introduced the divided back on postcards in 1905.  This allowed a message and the address to be written side by side.

The central focus of the image is the Gordon Statue which was erected by the people of Melbourne in 1887 to honour the memory of Charles George Gordon, Major-General Royal Engineers who fell at Khartoum, January 26 1885.

A colour postcard of the Treasury Gardens, c.1905.  It was printed in Germany.

When the Treasury Gardens were first layed out they included an ornamental pond.  In 1901 William Guilfoyle, director of the Royal Botanical Gardens, was asked to redesign the pond into a Japanese Garden.  It was completed in 1903.
