The book, produced by the East Melbourne Historical Society, is an illustrated history of domestic architecture in Jolimont and East Melbourne. The Preface to the book explains its intent:
This booklet represents a short ramble through the history of domestic architecture in East Melbourne and Jolimont. We have tried to pick out typical houses or apartment blocks from each decade and show why they are representative of that decade. We have also injected a little of the social and cultural history of the times by bringing to life some of the people connected with the buildings, be it architects, owners, or occupants.
We have chosen some buildings that may at first surprise, or even disappoint readers, because they are not necessarily the best or the biggest, but we have chosen them for exactly that reason. We felt that the grand or remarkable buildings were well covered by others, and information about them can readily be found on the websites of City of Melbourne’s i-Heritage, Heritage Victoria, The National Trust, Melbourne Mansions Database and others. We felt this was a chance to break new ground.
