Shows Mercy Private Hospital, Grey Street, East Melbourne, under construction in 1935.
The view is taken up the hill towards Clarendon Street to the west. The house on the corner of Clarendon Street, was known as Clarendon House and was built in 1854 for Sir William a’Beckett. It was demolished to make way for the Mercy Maternity Hospital. There are two buildings to the left of the hospital, now demolished. Immediately to the left is a pair of 19th century terrace houses (145-147 Grey Street) shown much altered with a later façade. Further to the left part of another building is visible (141 Grey Street). This was a small block of flats built c.1921 and which replaced an earlier freestanding house.
