A collection of photos taken just prior to the demolition of Cliveden Mansions which once stood on the corner of Wellington Parade and Clarendon Street, East Melbourne. The house was demolished to make way for the Hilton on the Park, now the Pullman Hotel. It is pictured devoid of all furniture and furnishings which had been sold at auction in the previous weeks.
The hotel retained some of the house's finest fittings and used them as decor in the hotel. Some of these have since been sold by the Pullman during renovations and were acquired by a private collector, Krystyna Campbell Pretty, and donated to the National Gallery of Victoria. The triple light window from the first floor landing, now known as the Welcome Window, is one of these.
The captions to the photos were created at the time the photos were taken and reflect the recent usage of the building as apartments rather than as the house it once was.
