A biography of George Robertson of Melbourne. (Not to be confused with George Robertson of Sydney (1860-1933.) Robertson arrived in Melbourne aboard the Great Britain in 1852. He quickly opened a shop in Russell Street before moving to Collins Street, between the Athenaeum and the Baptist Church. His business outgrew this site and in 1860 he bought a property at 69 (now 107) Elizabeth Street. He retired in 1890 and the business was continued by his son, Charles. In 1922 the company merged with Melville and Mullens and became known as Robertson and Mullens. In 1960 the unrelated firm of Angus and Robertson, founded by the other George Robertson, acquired Robertson and Mullens.
From about 1860-1862 George Robertson lived at 101 Hotham Street, East Melbourne, before moving permanently to St Kilda
