Fight to save the Ola Cohn Centre

Two items pertaining to the planned sale of the Ola Cohn Centre which would have meant the loss of the building to its occupiers, The Melbourne Society of Women Sculptors and Painters.

1. A letter to members of the East Melbourne Group seeking support in fighting the sale. 

2. A newspaper clipping from similar date outlining the issue.

Brochure advertising the auction of 164 Hotham Street, East Melbourne, scheduled for 6 October 2007.

Hand written note provides the information that the property was passed in on the day for 1.5m. Later sold to Tom Warwick for 1.6m.

A series of 16 photos taken at the time the house was open for inspection prior to sale.  The house had been owned by Lord and Lady Casey.  Lord Casey died in 1976 and Lady Casey in 1983.  From that time until 2013 the house remained in the hands of the Trustees of Lady Casey's estate and operated as accomodation for visiting artists, musicians and actors.

Richmond Barracks, plans 1860

Sketch plans of the Richmond Mounted Police Barracks made in preparation for the building of a new police hospital.

The Barracks were on the site of the residential area now bounded by Wellington Parade, Vale Street and Hoddle Street. The Barracks were decommissioned in 1881, when the site was subdivided and sold to private buyers.

Colin Howarth was the Housekeeper of the Legislative Assembly.  He lived in an apartment at Parliament House with his wife, June and son, Darren.

sketch portrait and obituary for Thomas William Lloyd who died in 1889.  Lloyd was the first owner of 157 Wellington Parade South, built 1862.

Colour photo of Parcels Van 10CM parked in Jolimont Railway Yards, (sidings). The MCG is visible in the background providing a useful landmark.   The land was sold to a private developer in the 1980s and became the residential precinct known as Wellington Gardens, East Melbourne.

A black and white postcard of Parliament House c.1905. It was printed in Prussia as part of the Victoria Stamp Market (VSM) Series.

Australia introduced the divided back on postcards in 1905.  This allowed a message and the address to be written side by side.

A black and white postcard published by Robert Jolley, Melbourne.  It is postmarked Hamilton 14 November 1906, but is earlier as from 1905 all postcards were printed with a vertical line down the centre, allowing for a message on one side and the address on the other.  This postcard has no vertical line.

Eastern Hill from Parliament House

A colour tinted postcard with a wide white border.  It was printed in Saxony for the Victoria Stamp Market (V St M).  The message on the back of the card is dated 23 February 1910.  This is probably about the time the card was printed. 

The photo was taken from the roof of Parliament House and shows a view of Eastern Hill looking towards Fittzroy.
