Photo shows members of the Jolimont Football Club, 1915. John Samuel Goldsbury is seated first on the left in the middle row. He enlisted in the AIF in 1916 and his story is available using link below. John, or Jack, was a keen sportsman and joined the East Melbourne Cricket Club in 1914. In 1921, when their ground closed to make way for the Jolimont Shunting Yards, the East Melbourne Cricket Club merged with the Hawthorn Cricket Club. Jack remained a member of the Club as a player and administrator for the next sixty years.
Many other members of the Jolimont Football Club also enlisted. The Argus, on 25 Sep 1915 recorded the following
A social gathering was held on Thursday evening in the Holy Trinity Hill, East Melbourne, to say farewell to the nine members of the Jolimont Football Club, who have enlisted, and presented them with wristlet watches. The chair was taken by Mr. Farthing, MLA. The young men are Privates Berkeley, Burleigh, J Grant, W. Grant, Holmes, Honeybone, Ludbrooke, Meredith, and Moore.
All the people mentioned in the article except Meredith also have stories on our website and links are given below.
It is hoped more team members can be identified by our readers.
The Jolimont Football Club did not feature a great deal in newspaper stories and it is presumed it was a team playing in the second league, on a community level.
Its club colours were blue with a white V.
