New Boundary Hotel Newsletter

In 1991 chef Lino d'Angelo leased the dining room of the New Boundary Hotel to run his Restaurant Menage. This newsletter lists the various activities planned at the restaurant including music nights and wine appreciation courses. The newsletter also reproduces an article by Claude Forrel about the new restaurant.

Madame Midas

Copy of the book, Madame Midas, Fergus Hume's second book after his best-selling The Mystery of a Hansom Cab, with an introduction by Simon Caterson. The book was first published in 1888. It is a story of crime set in the Ballarat goldfields.

Documents relating to the property at 80 Gipps Street, East Melbourne 1. Original Certificate of Title on vellum (cancelled) showing successive ownership of land from 1934 (Mary Ellis and Bernard Evans) to 1995 (Raj Vasudeva) 2. Seven photocopied A4 pages each a section of a large blueprint plan, no date but circa 1935.

East Melbourne, Grey Street 053, 055, 057, 059, 061, 067

The photo shows four two storey terrace houses and a single storey double fronted house. The terrace was known as Eamont Terrace. The two houses on the left were built in 1862, and the two on the right in 1866. The single storey house was built in 1867. This dates the photo between 1867 and 1871 when another pair of matching terrace houses were built to the left of the existing ones.

A photo of the house at 61 Grey Street, East Melbourne. Two women, possibly members of Peter Hill's family, stand at the gate. Peter Hill was the original owner of the house, which was built in 1867. It stayed in the family until 1912. The left hand window of the house has been replaced by a bay window. The plaque over the doorway shows the name of the house, Belle Vue.

Berry Street 140 Years: Restoring Trust and Hope

A history of Berry Street, formerly Berry Street Babies Home. Numerous photos, mostly unidentified, which show life inside the Home. One photo of particular interest to East Melbourne (p.22), and which is not identified, is the old Police Hospital that was part of the Richmond Barracks and was the building the institution first moved into in 1881 after leaving Fitzroy where it was founded.

Digital copy of coloured slide. Photo shows remodelled terrace house, once identical to its neighbour. The house has had further remodelling since.
The first tenant to live in the house was Mrs Blair and her adopted son, Aboriginal boy, Lani [for further see link below]

Portrait of William Shiels, barrister, born 1847 in Glasgow. Son of William Shiels and his wife, Elizabeth (nee Burrell) who owned the James Watt Hotel in Spencer Street. He owned as investments two houses in Canterbury Terrace, Nos 88 and 106 Powlett Street, East Melbourne.

A private treasury open for all gardeners to see

The original photos are mounted on foamcore board as part of an exhibition entitled 'A Picture of Diversity' which was held in 2004 by the East Melbourne Historical Society to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the East Melbourne Group. 

The photos were taken in 1989 by Bruce Trethowan who later created the presentation boards for the exhibition.

This painting by Janie Wilkinson Whyte (1869-1953) shows Jolimont Station taken from the foot bridge to the east and looking west. A steam train is shown waiting at the station and heading towards the city. The spire of St Enoch's United Presbyerian Church is in the centre distance. A part of Cliveden Mansions appears at the right hand edge of the painting.
