Digital copies of coloured slides. Two photos taken during the Herald Outdoor Art Show which was held annually in the Treasury Gardens for a week each December from 1953. One photo shows patrons enjoying refreshments on the lawns; while the other shows the crowd filing past past the paintings which are attached to cyclone wire fencing.

Digital copy of coloured slide. Photo shows the building at the corner of George and Simpson Streets, East Melbourne. The corner unit has been commercial premises since erection in 1864 by Thomas Main, starting as a grocery shop and now the George Street Cafe. At the time of the photo it was Davey's Locker Library, run by Mrs FD Davey from 1945 to 1956.

Digital copy of a coloured slide. Photo shows single storey house with a brushwood fence and verandah. A sign at the front advertises The Office of Harry A Norris, Architects, 36 Jolimont Road. The numbers were changed c.1955 and the site became No 136. The building has since been demolished and the site is now part of an office building numbered 128-136 Jolimont Road.

Next door on the left is a partial view of 115 Grey Street, a blue stone house with timber verandah and convex roof. This house, built in 1854, is thought to be the oldest house in East Melbourne still standing.

The photo shows French runner, Alain Mimoun, racing along Brunton Avenue towards the Melbourne Cricket Ground and the finish line of the Melbourne Olympics marathon, run on 1 December 1956. He crossed the line before anyone else had entered the arena. It was the first time he had competed in a marathon.

ICI Building, 1958

Digital copy of a colour slide. Photo shows the ICI Building taken from the roof of the General Post Office building on the corner of Exhibition and Lt Lonsdale Streets. The photographer, Gordon J Walker, worked in the building at the time. ICI House was completed in 1958 and was for three years the tallest building in Australia. On the right is St Patrick's Cathedral.

Kelly Gang rides into history

Newspaper clipping about the addition of surviving fragments of the film, The Story of the Kelly Gang being added to UNESCO's Memory of the World Register. This film is recognised as the world's first full length feature film. It was made in 1906 and directed by Charles Tait who later moved to East Melbourne and lived at 60 Clarendon Street.

Bland Holt and 19th century theatre

Amongst the theatre people represented was Bland Holt (1851-1942) who lived at Mere House, 176 Wellington Parade c.1904-c.1919. He was a flamboyant theatrical producer whose shows were spectacular if not entirely accurate in detail.

Laws past in 2015 that make illegal to harass people within 150 metres of abortion providers came into effect on Monday 2 May 2016. Anti-abortion advocates produced a flyer which was circulated throughout East Melbourne in protest against the new laws. This was picked up by The Saturday Paper.
