Gone to War as Sister: Sisters and Brothers at the Front

One of 16 illustrated panels prepared by Janet Scarfe and volunteers from the East Melbourne Historical Society as part of an exhibition, Gone to War as Sister, commemorating the lives and work of the many women who served as nurses in the First World War and had connection with East Melbourne or Jolimont.

Herald Outdoor Art Show, c.1954

Digital copies of coloured slides. Two photos taken during the Herald Outdoor Art Show which was held annually in the Treasury Gardens for a week each December from 1953. One photo shows patrons enjoying refreshments on the lawns; while the other shows the crowd filing past past the paintings which are attached to cyclone wire fencing.

East Melbourne, George Street 59,61,63,65, Davey's Locker Library

Digital copy of coloured slide. Photo shows the building at the corner of George and Simpson Streets, East Melbourne. The corner unit has been commercial premises since erection in 1864 by Thomas Main, starting as a grocery shop and now the George Street Cafe. At the time of the photo it was Davey's Locker Library, run by Mrs FD Davey from 1945 to 1956.

Digital copy of coloured slide. Photo shows house at 110 Jolimont Road, Jolimont. Photo also shows part of the neighbouring houses. The house on the left is now demolished. 110 Jolimont Road was designed by George Wharton in 1889 for Mrs Margaret Henningham, widow of Ralph N Henningham, hoteliers.

52 Powlett Street, East Melbourne, c.1955

Digital copy of a coloured slide. The photo shows 52 Powlett Street. During the 1950s its cast iron verandah and balcony were removed in the spirit of modernisation. They have since been replaced but not to the original design.

129 Gipps Street, East Melbourne, 1954

Digital copy of a coloured slide. Photo shows single storey house on the corner of Gipps Street and a lane at the end of which Cairns Memorial Church can be seen. A small car is parked in the lane and a couple are either moving furniture from the car into the house, or vice versa.

136 Jolimont Road, Jolimont - Harry A Norris, architects, c.1955

Digital copy of a coloured slide. Photo shows single storey house with a brushwood fence and verandah. A sign at the front advertises The Office of Harry A Norris, Architects, 36 Jolimont Road. The numbers were changed c.1955 and the site became No 136. The building has since been demolished and the site is now part of an office building numbered 128-136 Jolimont Road.

East Melbourne, Grey Street 119 Claremount

Digital copy of a coloured slide. Photo shows one of a pair of terrace-type houses with arcaded verandah recessed under the upper floor. Next door on the left is a partial view of 115 Grey Street, a blue stone house with timber verandah and convex roof. This house, built in 1854, is thought to be the oldest house in East Melbourne still standing.

Alain Mimoun heads to the finish line in the Melbourne Olympics marathon, 1956

Digital copy of a colour slide. The photo shows French runner, Alain Mimoun, racing along Brunton Avenue towards the Melbourne Cricket Ground and the finish line of the Melbourne Olympics marathon, run on 1 December 1956. He crossed the line before anyone else had entered the arena. It was the first time he had competed in a marathon.

ICI Building, 1958

Digital copy of a colour slide. Photo shows the ICI Building taken from the roof of the General Post Office building on the corner of Exhibition and Lt Lonsdale Streets. The photographer, Gordon J Walker, worked in the building at the time. ICI House was completed in 1958 and was for three years the tallest building in Australia. On the right is St Patrick's Cathedral.

The sound of music

Newspaper cutting about the visit of Oscar Hammerstein III to Melbourne. He is the grandson of Oscar Hammerstein II, co-writer of such musicals as Sound of Music and South Pacific. The article mentions Oscar Hammerstein II's marriage to Dorothy Blanchard in 1929. Dorothy was the daughter of the Mrs Blanchard who owned 99 Hotham Street, East Melbourne 1922-1925.

Dispatches from Gallipoli - Phillip Schuler, war correspondent

Newspaper clipping about the life and work of Phillip Schuler, war correspondent for The Age during the Gallipoli campaign, and soldier on the Western Front, where he lost his life. Phillip Schuler was born at Brentani Terrace, 159-161 Grey Street, East Melbourne and lived as a small child at 62 Jolimont Street, Jolimont before moving with his family to their permanent home in Hawthorn.

Preserving our heritage. Melbourne University Archives

Newspaper clipping about the Melbourne University Archives which turned 50 in 2010. The clipping includes a photo of a participant in the Land Rights March of 26 January 1976. The photo is taken outside Captain Cook's cottage as a symbol of the British invasion. An additional point of interest is the advertised admission prices compared with the present day.

Kelly Gang rides into history

Newspaper clipping about the addition of surviving fragments of the film, The Story of the Kelly Gang being added to UNESCO's Memory of the World Register. This film is recognised as the world's first full length feature film. It was made in 1906 and directed by Charles Tait who later moved to East Melbourne and lived at 60 Clarendon Street.

Bland Holt and 19th century theatre

Newspaper clipping about the Break a Leg exhibition held at the City Museum in June 2009. Artefacts from 19th century theatre were on show. Amongst the theatre people represented was Bland Holt (1851-1942) who lived at Mere House, 176 Wellington Parade c.1904-c.1919. He was a flamboyant theatrical producer whose shows were spectacular if not entirely accurate in detail.

James Sinclair and the Fitzroy Gardens

Includes author's own memories of seeing school children cutting through the gardens to the various schools and the many sculptures which adorned the gardens. The article mainly centres on the establishment of the gardens by James Sinclair (now disputed in favour of Clement Hodgkinson) and the story of his remarkable life.

Hoddle Street traffic congestion

Frederick Baker's gravestone

Newspaper clipping about tours of the Melbourne General Cemetery run by the National Trust of Victoria's senior historian, Celestina Sagazio. One of the graves mentioned and shown in a photograph is that of Frederick Baker, the opera singer known as Federici, and best known as the ghost who is said to haunt the Princess Theatre.

Swimming in Rod Laver Arena

Newspaper clipping about the World Swimming Championships to be held in a temporary pool constructed inside the Rod Laver Arena. Preliminary troubles included leakage. After the Championships most of the water in the pool was to be piped to the lake in the Royal Botanic Gardens, and the rest to water distressed elms.

Abortion clinics win exclusion zones

Laws past in 2015 that make illegal to harass people within 150 metres of abortion providers came into effect on Monday 2 May 2016. Anti-abortion advocates produced a flyer which was circulated throughout East Melbourne in protest against the new laws. This was picked up by The Saturday Paper.

Holy Trinity interior

Photo of interior of Holy Trinity Church, East Melbourne The church was completed in 1906. According to Laurence Moore, church warden and organist at Holy Trinity, the organ currently in the church was installed in 1913 replacing the one shown in the photo which was on loan. These two dates set the limits for the photo as 1906-1913.
