Auction brochure (6 pages) for 1 Opportunity Lane, East Melbourne scheduled for 21 November 2015. The property was passed in at $1,650,000.
A newspaper clipping from The Age, 22-23 January 2016 featuring the property for private sale. It was later sold for $1,620,000.
The name Opportunity Lane was never gazetted owing to objections to the name by some neighbouring residents. During World War 2 when US Marines were barracked at the Melbourne Cricket Ground officers were known to linger in Darling Square to await their turn with Madam Opportunity who used to ring a little bell at her front door opposite the park to let them know she was ready for her next client. She no doubt provided a useful service at a unique time in East Melbourne's history when it was inhabited by an abundance of fit young men with time on their hands.
The lane has now been named Buchan Lane, after the original owner of the house in Albert Street on the corner of the lane. Its back garden is the site of 1 Opportunity Lane.
