East Melbourne, Grey Street 053, 055, 057, 059, 061, 067

The photo shows four two storey terrace houses and a single storey double fronted house. The terrace was known as Eamont Terrace. The two houses on the left were built in 1862, and the two on the right in 1866. The single storey house was built in 1867. This dates the photo between 1867 and 1871 when another pair of matching terrace houses were built to the left of the existing ones.

A photo of the house at 61 Grey Street, East Melbourne. Two women, possibly members of Peter Hill's family, stand at the gate. Peter Hill was the original owner of the house, which was built in 1867. It stayed in the family until 1912. The left hand window of the house has been replaced by a bay window. The plaque over the doorway shows the name of the house, Belle Vue.

Description: 

A single storey render dwelling with central entry and projecting bay window on bluestone plinth. There is a bracketed eaves and stop chamfers to opening reveals. The path is paved with diamond pattern two tone terracotta tiles. [City of Melbourne, i-Heritage database]

History: 

This house was built by Murray and Hill, contractors, for themselves. At the same time they built a cottage in Albert Street: the Grey Street house was to be for Peter Hill and the Albert Street house for Thomas Murray. Their notification to Council of their intent to build was dated 28 August 1866.

1886 Murray and Hill built 2 cottages for selves. Peter Hill was the owner/ occupier of Number 61. Later occupied 1889 by Lady Hastings.

1861. MCC BR: J. Hill for Hugh Emmerson small shop.
1861. Rated brick shop and house, 3 rooms plus kitchen.
1862-1910+. Emmerson dairy, shop.
1978. Replaced by new 2-storey shop, which may include part of old.

1885. Thomas Murray - owner. Occupiers: No.71 O'Neil. No.73 Hughes. No.75 (this should possibly be No.79? Refer index card.)
1886-95c. Herr Louis Pabst, music teacher, lived at No.71. Organiser of Risvegliato concerts.

1861-75. Wm. Thomas Trollope - owner/occupier.
1863. W.J. Trollope - additions.
1872-81. Name mentioned: Mrs. James Service. Probably wife of Service, Vic. Premier.
1883-1892. Name mentioned: Trollope.

1880. Murray and Hill to build house for W.E. Morris. Architects: Terry and Oakden.
1885. W.E. Morris - owner/occupier. Brick house, 10 rooms.
1890. C. Langford to make additions for E.W. Morris.
Note: Part of original house appears to exist behind new facade and red brick extension on east side - note old chimneys.
