Two shops and seven roomed brick villa
150 was one in from the SW corner of Powlett Street. It was a pharmacy from about 1896 to 1924. The first chemist there was Patrick McLean; he was followed about two years later by Edward Maurice Gibbs; then for about ten years from 1903 by Harry J. Massey, chemist and dentist; and finally Walter J. Williams, chemist and optician, purchased the business about 1913. Williams, in 1924, moved the business across Powlett Street to larger premises at 140 Wellington Parade. 148, on the corner, is now (2009)the site of Laurent Bakery. It was not graced with a number until some years later. It was a brick house initially of six rooms and all the chemists had it as their residential address.
Eliza Jane Sprigg owned the three properties at the time of her death in 1916. At that time the properties were all rented to Mr. Williams, chemist. 148 and 150 were rented at 182 pounds per annum; and 152 was rented at 91 pounds per annum. According to a descendant of Eliza Jane Sprigg's, at the time the shop was auctioned, along with the other properties, in the 1950s, it was E.L Hodgson's Estate Agency and was bought by Eric Weber, Real Estate Agents.
Mrs. Sprigg lived at 166 Wellington Parade, and also owned 154 and 160 Wellington Parade, and 17 Powlett Street.
Part of site now occupied by apartment block known as 1 Powlett Street with shops below.
