File contains postcards to and from members of the Carroll family of 139 Simpson Street, East Melbourne; invitations to institutional events; a photo labelled on reverse “Maggie and Annie”; several items removed from a scrap book and in very poor condition including theatre programs with reviews pasted to them. Most items date to around 1906-1908.

East Melbourne, Albert Street 033
According to the Notice of Intent to Build it was 'a house of two rooms and attics, capable of conversion to two houses.'
Section 27, on part of which this house stood, was largely given over to churches: The Free Presbyterians, the Primitive Methodists and the Methodist New Connexion, but on 16 October 1868 the rest of the land was sold at the Crown Land Sales. All the lots were bought by Isaacs and Moss, who resold them over the following year. Lot 1 was bought by W.H.
East Melbourne, Berry Street 28, 30, 32
Group of 3 late 19th century ruled render terraces with simple render embellishments. The terrace is designed to be symmetrical about the centre with parapet details and cast iron balcony panels to the side terraces varying from the centre terrace. [i-Heritage database]
These three houses were built for Hirsch Fink by Michael Kelly. The architect’s name is given simply as Beatty and has so far been unidentified. The name may refer to John Beatty who was a builder or contractor and was at the time the houses were built, mayor of Prahran.
East Melbourne, Fitzroy Gardens old kiosk
A two storey structure of rustic appearance with half timbered gables and deep verandahs. Its focal point was the octagonal bandstand at the corner of the building.
The Argus, on 28 February 1908, reported:

East Melbourne, Gipps Street 015, Faraday House
Two storeyed, single fronted house with cast iron balcony, in the style of a terrace house.
The 1870 Rate Books list John Kelly as the owner, and describe the house as having '6 rooms bathroom 2 kitchens servants room and shed'. Thereafter it is listed simply as 8 rooms. In 1873 William Sydney Gibbons appears for the first time as the owner. He lived there with his family until his death in 1917. Gibbons was an analyst, and for many years, the government analyst.
East Melbourne, Grey Street 035, Irwell Cottage
Single fronted, single storey cottage.
The cottage was built in 1861 for Edward Septimus Heelis, who occupied it until 1866. He continued to own it until about 1885, when William Henry Kelly, the owner of the neighbouring houses at 37 and 39 Grey Street, bought it. From 1868 until 1872 the cottage was occupied by Chiu Ang Goon (various spellings), and from 1874 to 1875 by Louis Suhard.
East Melbourne, Grey Street 037-039
A pair of two storey houses, the second attic style floor being within the roof cavity. The houses were extensively modified in 1936.
Number 37 was built for William Kelly in 1860 on land 40ft. x 70ft. According to the Rate Books it had three rooms. In 1867 William Kelly registered a notice of intention to build extensions and alterations to the house. It then became five rooms. The land size was reduced to 20ft x 70ft coinciding with the appearance of a similar five roomed house on the excised vacant block (No. 39).

1881. David Mitchell to build three 3-storey residences for Hon. W.J. Clarke (later 'Sir'), who named 'Janet Terrace' after his second wife. Architect: Charles Webb.
1885. W.J. Clarke - owner 3 houses. Occupiers: No.92 J. Hardy. No.94 O. Bichner. No.96 F.A. Hare - Police Magistrate - see index card for more details. He occupied for about 8 years.
