Symmetrical, two storey, double fronted, cement rendered house with bay windows each side.
On 18 June 1858 Crouch & Wilson called for tenders for the erection of a cottage residence in Powlett Street for Raphael Alexander. The rate books from 1859 to 1868 give fluctuating descriptions of the house as having between 5 and 7 rooms but from 1864 settle at 6 rooms. In 1869 it is listed as having 12 rooms, coinciding with a new owner, Henry "Money" Miller. Miles Lewis considers the house to be consistent with the style of Crouch & Wilson so it seems likely that the house has been extended, possibly with a second storey, rather than demolished and rebuilt. Henry Miller continued to own the property until his death, and in 1890 it was still in the hands of his executors. The house was owned by Eliza Jane Sprigg at the time of her death in 1916. It was then valued at 1,700 pounds and rented to Mr. Hill at 45 shillings per week.
1859-1860 Raphael Alexander. Alexander arrived in Melbourne in 1840 and set up a large wholesale and retail drapery business in Collins Street. He lived at 17 Powlett Street only briefly. His son was born there in 1859. He then moved to Ballarat. He continued to own the property until 1866. He died in Ballarat in 1882.

Amongst other buildings, he did the E.S. & A. Bank House in Collins Street and the Scotch College".....[describing Scotch College] "The friezes beneath the ceiling, painted by Mr. Robert Reid, were in their way very good....".... "Like the Scotch College, Doona had been decorated by Mr. Reid." [Doona in Hopetoun Rd., Malvern, now Toorak, was the home of Henry Bourne Higgins, barrister, MLA, Attorney-General, justice of the High Court.]
