East Melbourne, Albert Street 092, Coniston

Description: 

A single storey brick house

History: 

The house was first built as a five roomed brick cottage but gained two more rooms c. 1885. From 1900 to about 1920 the house was occupied by John Hurst Green who then handed over the house to his younger son, also John Hurst Green (both were known as Jack) who had it until it was sold and demolished in 1964.

Description: 

A brick and wooden house.

History: 

The Notice of Intent to build describes the proposed building as a wooden cottage. It first appears in the Rate Books as a five roomed brick and wooden house. Extensions of c.1885 increased its size to eleven rooms. Its first owner, John Box owned the house for only two years before selling to Thomas Richard Wilson who lived there until the 1880s.

1871 two 2 storey houses 260 and 262 were built for Messrs Mixner and Campbell, lime merchants. Architect was Crouch and Wilson. Campbell lived in 260 and Mixner in 262. No. 262 was demolished to make way for the Masonic Centre.

1865. Corben and Wilson commenced foundations. Erection for William Bowen, chemist of 43 Collins Street - owner/occupier. Occupied to 1872c. This site was old No.7 in George Street.
1873-91. Jenkin Collier - owner/occupier. Was deeply involved in Land Boom Speculations.
1877. W. Lawrence to build additions.
1894-95. Name mentioned: Rev. Dr. Bevan.

1880. MCC BR: Thos. Newton of Chernwood Cresc., St Kilda, to build 2-storey house for Bernard Marks? Crouch and Wilson - architects.
1881. J.L. Purves lived here.
1902-08. Col. J.M. Templeton. Actuary. First chairman of Public Service Board. Died here 1908.

Description: 

Rate books describe it as a brick house of twelve rooms

History: 

This house was designed by Crouch and Wilson for Bernard Marks. Thomas Newton of Charnwood Crescent, St Kilda was the builder. It was completed in 1881. In 1901 Bernard Marks and his family travelled to England and rented the house out. They never returned to the house, moving instead to St Kilda.
