This cottage was once the stables belonging to the property at 20 George Street, and was for many years after the subdivision known as 20a George Street and could be accessed by a footpath from George Street. No 16 George Street was built by Robert Dixon for himself in 1869. The Rate Books described it as a two storey house of six rooms on a block of land having a 66 foot frontage to George Street. It was double-fronted.

Notes on card: No. 20a situated behind No. 20. 20a appears to be attached to No. 16, c1870 Mr. Robt Dixon. Cottage with attic rooms, probably a former coach house. Fronts onto yard behind post office. Has entrance from lane in Hotham Street. R.O.W. on north side leads tp P.O. yard. Appears 1894 on Board of Works Map M387 and in overlay 1922-32.

East Melbourne, Hotham Street 150
A modern two storey town house, retaining only the front wall and bluestone foundations of the earlier single storey Victorian cottage.
James Scoular owned and occupied the three roomed cottage until 1864 when it passed to Andrew Scoular, a produce merchant, who owned and occupied it until his death in 1867. Edward Bice became the owner the following year and he, too, owned it until his death in 1897.
