A homeless woman who went by the name of Painter was amongst a number of homeless people accommodated at Birches Apartments in Simpson Street, East Melbourne, during the Covid lockdowns in 2020-21.

107 Powlett Street by Elma Roach, 1938

The painting shows the house at 107 Powlett Street, East Melbourne, now much altered. 

At the time Elma Roach was living in a converted stable behind 144 Gipps Street.

Balzac

Miscellaneous collection of items relating to Balzac restaurant. The restaurant operated between 1956 and 2001. It was started by George and Mirka Mora who sold it about five years later to John and Maria Kornyei.  In the late 1970s it was sold to Leon Massoni.

Canvases a testament to a life's work

An article about the life and work of Joyce Meier. Joyce Meier and her family lived at 73-75 Grey Street, East Melbourne for nearly 60 years. She had trained as an artist but did not pursue a professional career after her marriage, but continued to paint for her own pleasure. She filled her house with canvases and murals. Photos

East Melbourne, George Street 190

Description: 

Single fronted two story house in the Federation style. The ground floor is red brick, the upper floor is rouch cast plaster.

History: 

The house at 190 George Street was built on part of the land once occupied by the original Trinity Church which burnt down on New Year’s Day 1905.  The land was sold in 1908 and the new church built on the corner of Clarendon and Hotham Streets.

East Melbourne, Powlett Street 107

Description: 

Originally a single-storey double-fronted house with verandah, and stable.  Now very much altered with a second storey added, and a garage in front of the stable. 

History: 

107 Powlett Street was built in 1863 by James Nation for Vincent Matthew Wylly (sometimes erroneously Wylie or Wyley). It had five rooms, a kitchen and bathroom and a garden on its western side. 

In 1867 Wylly commissioned James Nation to build a small cottage on the garden site.  This is now numbered 153 Gipps Street.

Elizabeth Cotton Clark of 190 George Street

Life story of Elizabeth Cotton Clark compiled by Margaret Clark with additional notes by Jason Clark. Elizabeth was a photographic colourist as well as a talented botanical artist. The house at 190 George Street was built for her in 1909.  She died only a year later. 

She was the sister of John James Clark, architect, noted for the Old Treasury building.
