The photo shows a large two storey, double fronted house with a cast iron verandah. Although it is hard to see, the accompanying detail from the MMBW plan of 1898 shows the windows to the right hand side of the photo to be bay windows.

1855. Name mentioned: Alexander Balcombe.
1855 onwards. 'Eastcourt' was the home of Alexander Beatson Balcombe, grandfather of Dame Mabel Brookes. He died there in 1877 and his widow occupied the property till her death in 1907. The name was later changed to 'Lanivet'. The East Melbourne Library now occupies this site.

A collection of 14 digital images relating to the Wood family of Woodlawn, 54 Powlett Street, East Melbourne.
James Wood commissioned Blackwell and Dalton to build Woodlawn for him and his wife, Mary, in 1889. Their portraits are etched into the glass above the vestibule door. James was a principal in Wood Dunn & Co. Market Street, dairy produce merchants.
