Michael was born on 2 June 1886 to Francis O'Brien and Mary Gertrude O'Brien (nee McSweeney) in Albury, NSW. He was one of 7 children, 4 brothers and 2 sisters. By 1904 the family was living in Geelong, where his mother remained until her death in 1941.

O'DEE, Claude Benedict
Claude Benedict O’Dee was the son of Frederick O’Dee and his wife, Katherine, and was born in East Melbourne on 8 February 1897. At the time of Claude’s birth Fred, as he was known, was assistant inspector of fisheries. In 1901 he became the founding president of the Victorian Piscatorial Council.
