Date built:
1939
Architect:
Arthur Edward Pretty
Builder:
Stephen William Gwilliam
First owner:
Stephen William Gwilliam, master builder Description:
Block of flats built of clinker brick in an English suburban style.
History:
Arthur Edward Pretty designed the building for the owner Stephen William Gwillam, master builder. An unusual case of the builder choosing the architect rather than the other way around.
Arthur Pretty's father was a butcher and as a small child Arthur caught his hand in a mincing machine and it had to be amputated. It is remarkable that he managed to produce the finely detailed drawing needed for architectural plans.
