East Melbourne, Vanishing Melbourne, 180 Clarendon Street

Newspaper clipping - historical article centering on 180 Clarendon Street. It was previously known as Eaglestone Villa, Stanford House, The Arms of Jesus Babies Home, before it was demolished to make way for the Freemasons Hospital. Henry Cooke and Thomas Welton Stanford were among its previous owners. Stanford employed Louise Friedrichs as a maid.

Jolimont, Agnes Street 037, 039

Description: 

A pair of four roomed brick cottages.

History: 

The houses were completed in 1867 for William Peebles next door to his own residence immediately to the north. William Peebles was a clothier with premises in Bourke Street, Melbourne. He died of consumption aged 49 in 1871. His wife remained the owner of the properties until at least 1890. The houses were rented to short term tenants.

A book by Laurie Carew with Diane Masters, it is a memoir of Laurie's life from early childhood in Deniliquin and then moving to the city and becoming a window dresser for Georges, and later its Visual Merchandising Manager and Exhibitions Display Manager, through to his battle against melanoma and the amputation of his leg.
