A box of index cards used by Winston Burchett to record his basic research on East Melbourne. There are 1,954 cards containing handwritten and typed notes as well as photographs taken by Burchett. There are some panoramic photographs taken from the top of the Hilton Hotel and the Mercy Hospital. Otherwise the cards are specific to individual houses, buildings, or terraces. They are ordered by street and house number.
The cards have been catalogued here by suburb, street and street number or number range. In most cases there are several cards pertaining to an individual catalogue item.
After the death of Winston Burchett, the cards were donated by the family to the East Melbourne Library. The Library has generously made them available to the East Melbourne Historical Society to scan and publish in its on-line catalogue.
The reliability of the information in this set of cards varies considerably. It should not be used as a primary source but as a lead to other sources.
