This is an early handmade brick residence of 2 storeys. The facade is simply composed with three bays of exposed brick with a simple brick cornice.
The house was built for the Austrian born, landscape painter, Eugene von Guerard in 1862. It was initially described in the rate books as having four rooms but von Guerard had an additional three rooms built in 1866. James Dickson was the builder. One of the additional rooms was built as the artist's studio.

A series of 16 photos taken at the time the house was open for inspection prior to sale. The house had been owned by Lord and Lady Casey. Lord Casey died in 1976 and Lady Casey in 1983. From that time until 2013 the house remained in the hands of the Trustees of Lady Casey's estate and operated as accomodation for visiting artists, musicians and actors.

Hallmarks of a reverential renovation - 159 Gipps Street
Newspaper clipping tells of the renovation of Little Parndon, 159 Gipps Street, East Melbourne by owner architect, Emma Thompson. The house was originally built for artist, Eugene von Guerard, and in later years was the home of Lord and Lady Casey. As a consequence there were strict heritage controls in place.
