Gibson

East Melbourne, Grey Street, 015, 017

Description: 

A pair of two storey terraces with much altered facades.

History: 

On 28 December 1871 brothers-in-law August Wernicke and Dietrich Henne notified the city council of their intention to build two cottages, one for each of them. Wernicke was named as the builder. Wernicke’s house was the one now numbered 17 and Henne owned No 15.

1870. David Gibson - owner/occupier. Brick, 8 rooms.

Jolimont, Jolimont Terrace 014

History: 

The street numbers in Jolimont Terrace changed c.1950 consequently the house now numbered 14 was previously numbered 40. This has caused some confusion in pursuing its history. Winston Burchett in his research in the 1970s, had it correctly identified as the house built for David Gibson, who owned Gibson's Flour Mills on the corner of Queensberry and Leicester Streets, Carlton.
