Rogers

East Melbourne, George Street 182, 184, 186

Description: 

Three three storey terrace houses of rendered brick. No. 182 retains a timber verandah and balcony at ground and first floor level. Its design and construction are unique. The verandahs and balconies have been removed from Nos. 184 and 186, however No. 184 is currently undergoing restoration and its verandah and balcony will be replaced.

History: 

The houses were designed by Joseph Reed who was probably the best known and most prolific architect in nineteenth century Melbourne.

1858. Edward Delbridge for Henry Budger - 3 houses. First Directory Entry: James Born, Robert R. Rogers, George Robertson. 1861. Henry Budger - owner of all three 2-storey houses. Occupiers: J.A. Bourke. H.R. Rogers. G. Robertson. 1868-1900. Occupier at No.101 Miss Eliza Hume. (Note: First photo dated 1973, second one 1978.)

1880. MCC BR: James Silk of Grattan Street, Carlton to build 2-storey house for Mr. S. Mirls. Mr. Rogers - architect. (Probably Robert Ravenshaw Rogers, 1850-1889). 1880-95. Simon Mirls and widow - occupants. Additional note: 1880-87 Samuel Mirls. 1883. Solomon Mirls, owner/occupier rated for 10 rooms. Occupants Listed: 1890: ??? Mirls, Mrs. Mirls. 17 rooms. 1895: ??? Mirls, Mrs.

Jolimont, Jolimont Terrace 28, Bromo House

Description: 

One of a pair of 2 storey ruled render terraces with quoins to corners and plain moulded string course to parapet. The timber fretwork single storey verandah is believed to be the original form. The stables to the rear are noteworthy. [from i-Heritage Database]

History: 

One of a pair of houses built at the same time by the same builder but for different owners. This house was built for John Munro Bruce, father of Stanley Melbourne Bruce. He married, at the house, his wife, Mary Ann Henderson in 1872, and remained there through the birth of their first child the following year, but then moved to St. Kilda.
