West side of Right of Way. Now demolished and replaced by flats Nos. 179-185. 1880. MCC BR: Thos. Newton of Chernwood Cresc., St Kilda, to build 2-storey house for Bernard Marks? Crouch and Wilson - architects. 1881. J.L. Purves lived here. 1902-08. Col. J.M. Templeton. Actuary. First chairman of Public Service Board. Died here 1908.

East Melbourne, George Street 179, Kilmaurs

Description: 

A photo in 'We of the Never Never with a memoir of Mrs. Gunn by Margaret Berry' shows the house as a large two storey house with a verandah and balcony with cast iron decoration on the west side; and on the east a simple rendered facade with a pair of arched windows above and below. Rate Books describe it as a brick house of twelve rooms.

History: 

Mrs. Aeneas Gunn, author of Australian classic, We of the Never Never, occupied the house with her two sisters, Elizabeth Christine Taylor and Carrie Templeton. We of the Never Never with a memoir of Mrs Gunn by Margaret Berry describes the household of "three middle aged very abstemious ladies with a maid". There are photos of the house, and author in the garden.

Description: 
A double fronted symmetrical two storey house with ornate cast iron verandah and balcony with slightly projecting pedimented entrance bay.
History: 
This house was built in 1856 for Michael Curtain, J.P., who arrived in Melbourne in 1839. The architect was Patrick Scanlan who advertised for tenders in December 1855 to build a two storied house and out offices. Patrick Scanlan had recently completed St. Patrick’s College, East Melbourne, where Curtain’s sons, Patrick and Robert, went to school.

Hallmarks of a reverential renovation - 159 Gipps Street

Newspaper clipping tells of the renovation of Little Parndon, 159 Gipps Street, East Melbourne by owner architect, Emma Thompson. The house was originally built for artist, Eugene von Guerard, and in later years was the home of Lord and Lady Casey. As a consequence there were strict heritage controls in place. The Age, 30 Jun-1 Jul 2017, Domain, pp.1 and 4-5.
