Remembered lessons from the time of Menzies

Mr Chaney has continued to take a keen interest in the difficulties that governments face in implementing  policies effectively and efficiently. His address will reflect upon failures of delivery of government policy in remote Australia, and draw upon lessons from the Menzies era to suggest how public administration might be improved.

Hon Fred Chaney AO, is a former Australian politician who serves as a Director of Reconciliation Australia and Chair of Desert Knowledge Australia. He was previously deputy President of the Australian Native Title Tribunal. Mr Chaney was born in Perth, and graduated in law at the University of Western Australia. He entered Federal Parliament in 1974 as a Liberal Senator and was Leader of the Opposition in the Senate (1983-1990) and Parliamentary Deputy Leader of the Liberal Party (1989-1990). He served as Minister for Administrative Services (1978), Minister for Aboriginal Affairs (1978 -1980) and Minister for Social Security (1980-83).
