Presenter(s):
Dr Merrilyn Murnane
Dr Merrilyn Murnane AM, a long-time East Melbourne resident, has published a book about the first women doctors in the USA, UK and Australia: Honourable Healers: Pioneering Women Doctors: Elizabeth Blackwell, Elizabeth Garrett Anderson and Constance Stone.
This talk will focus on the life and work of Constance Stone who lived for a time in East Melbourne. As well as being the first woman to be registered as a doctor in Australia she was the prime mover in the establishment of
the Queen Victoria Hospital for Women and Children. The Victorian Medical Women’s Society, which still continues, was another of her ideas which was so important in bringing those pioneering women doctors together.
