East Melbourne, Albert Street 314 - Burchett

Original 8 room wooden house with kitchen and stable built in 1855.
Replaced in 1862 by present 2 storey brick house built by David Mitchell for Hon James Francis - Premier and Treasurer of Victoria who occupied the property 1855-1884. Used as Library for CSIRO from 1979

East Melbourne, Albert Street 314, 318, Airlie

Description: 

This is a particularly fine two storey mansion of a very early date. The building is symmetrically arranged about a central entry porch with balcony over and secondary bracketed balconies on the flanks, creating a romantic appearance. The ground floor openings have arched heads whilst the upper windows have square heads with radiused frames.

History: 

On 8 May 1854 James G Francis advised the Melbourne City Council that he would make wooden additions to his house on Lots 8 and 9 of Section 8 in Albert Street.  Lot 8 was on the corner of Eades Street and Lot 9 was next door fronting Eades Street. A ‘staff wanted’ ad in the Argus of 29 April 1854 gives an idea of East Melbourne at the time:

East Melbourne, George Street 040, 042 - Burchett

Present Nos. 40-42 were originally 43-41. Vacant land between Simpson and Hoddle Street till 1866. MCC BR: 1868. Wright and Smith to build 2 x 4 room houses for Mr. McLean. (Letter from Elizabeth Barter to Slim McBeath states that: Built by McLean of McLean Brothers and Rigg -

East Melbourne, Hotham Street 050

Description: 

A fine two storey tuckpointed brick (possibly polychromatic) residence with render string courses, hood mouldings and eaves brackets. There is a Gothic arched entry porch with tessellated tile floor. The ground floor windows have semi circular arches with Gothic hoods springing from the string course. The first floor openings are segmental with a punctuated string above.

History: 

On 30 April 1868 architect Geo R Johnson advertised for tenders for the ‘erection of bluestone basement to villa residence’. The successful tender was soon chosen and on 11 May Charles Rippon advised the City Council that John Pigdon, builder of Faraday Street, Carlton would build for him foundations for a house.

1885. First Directory reference: Harold Francis. James Anderson. Oliver McLean. Sarah Higginson.
Note: National Trust citation:'Notable Victorian terrace with orginal interiors'. Classified.
Photo shows No.114 left-hand most terrace.

East Melbourne, Simpson Street 054, 056, Liege Apartments

Description: 

Notable features include unpainted decorative brickwork. A three storey block of flats incorporating a number of understated Moderne details into an inexpensive and otherwise generic design.

History: 

I.G. Anderson was commissioned to build this block of apartments by Liege Investments Pty Ltd, a company which had applied for registration less than a week before the building application was lodged on 12 August 1940. This was the same day the building application was lodged for 29 Hotham Street, also by Anderson.
