The photo shows a large two storey, double fronted house with a cast iron verandah. Although it is hard to see, the accompanying detail from the MMBW plan of 1898 shows the windows to the right hand side of the photo to be bay windows.

1855. Name mentioned: Alexander Balcombe.
1855 onwards. 'Eastcourt' was the home of Alexander Beatson Balcombe, grandfather of Dame Mabel Brookes. He died there in 1877 and his widow occupied the property till her death in 1907. The name was later changed to 'Lanivet'. The East Melbourne Library now occupies this site.

Large, 9-roomed, wooden house with stabling and coachhouse
The house was built in 1854 for George Smyth. He was at the time a marine and fire insurance broker and later manager of the Professional Life Assurance Company. In September 1853 he advertised for an ‘Imported Wood house about 40 feet by 30 feet, for a private residence’.
