Photograph of a five house terrace on the corner of Wellington Parade and Hoddle Street taken some time between 1941 and 1953, probably towards the end of this date range.
The front of the fifth terrace has been so substantially modified that it appears that it is not of the same origin. However, the location of the pediment, the chimneys and the common wall between 8 and 10, confirm that the five are part of the one. The 1898 MMBW plan at http://emhs.org.au/catalogue/slvbw0022 shows the footprint of the original terrace.
The State Library of Victoria numbers 3 of the houses only as 24, 26 and 28 Wellington Parade. This is confusing and is almost certainly an error. The overhead tram wires, the street name plate, the picture perspective and the corresponding MMBW plan tend to substantiate the actual location and numbering as described here.
The photo can be dated approximately from the following observations:
In the photo, the car in front of the terrace appears to be a somewhat ageing 1941 Chevrolet (distinguished from earlier and later models by the headlights and the grill).
The same photo appears on page 127 of the book "Early Melbourne architecture, 1840-1888" by Maie Casey, Joan Lindsay, D. A. Casey, et al., O.U.P., 1953. See http://emhs.org.au/catalogue/embk0046.
The full State Library of Victoria record is as follows although the house numbering is obviously in error.
