His name appeared in a list of the store's staff supporting a call to enlist. His next of kin was his wife, Maggie Isabell Woodley of 89 Powlett Street, East Melbourne. He was 5ft. 6ins, with dark brown hair and blue eyes. Embarked Melbourne on RMS Orontes on 29 Mar 1916. Embarked England for France 23 Jun 1916. Promoted temporary corporal 5 Oct 1918; promoted lance sergeant 16 Dec 1918. On leave to England 24 Jan 1919. 'Granted leave from 1/4/19 to 1/7/19 Military Employ with pay & subsistance. Reason: Furnishing Trade attending Craig Williamson Propriety Ltd., 17-18 Basinghall St., London EC2.' Discharged 4 Oct 1919 in England to take up a position in Calcutta, India.
