- William Telford was born in Liverpool, England and enlisted on the 16 March 1916 at 39 years and 8 months of age into the 23rd Battalion
- William was single, being 5 feet 4 inches tall, weighing 137 lbs with tattoos on both forearms and chest and was a Stevedore
- Williams parents were deceased and a friend Mrs Laura McArthur of Williamstown was nominated as his next of kin
- Embarked for overseas duty on "Shropshire" disembarking at Plymouth on the 11 November 1916
- Proceeded to France on th 13 December 1916 and in July 1917 was admitted to hospital suffering frm the Mumps
- William was killed in action in Belgium on the 2 October 1917
- Laura McArtur, his next of kin died whilst William was on active service. William's will nominated Mrs Jane Lynch of Williamstown Victoria as his beneficiary and she received his personal effects and a religious book
