Wife - Sarah Jane Poynter, 583 Victoria Parade East Melbourne
- James enlisted on the 18 September 1916 at the age of 43 years and 8 months with the occupation o Clerk
- His parents were deceased, however, James married Sarah Jane on 23 November 1916 who became his next of kin
- Upon enlistment Private James Poynter was stationed at Domain Camp, part of the 21st (Depot) Battalion. AIF.
- Promoted to Corporal on th 24 October 1916 and embarked for overseas service on the 16 December 1916 disembarking at Plymouth and immeditely transferred to the Windmill Camp.
- Transferred to France on 28 May 1917 to reinforce the 37th Battalion
- Unfortunately James suffered from scabies and spent time in hospital in England and France, returning to England on 1 September 1917
- Returned to Australia per the Durham Castle on the 10 March 1918 for discharge on medical grounds with rheumatism and was discharged on the 14 June 1918
