LLOYD, Franklin Samuel
Franklin Lloyd was 23 years old, 5 feet eleven inches and weighing twelve stone when he enlisted at Melbourne on 2 July, 1915. He was a gasfitter by trade, and gave as his next of kin his mother, Mrs. Emily Bailey, living at 93 High St., Northcote. He trained at the military camp in Queens Rd., Melbourne, before being sent overseas attached to the 12th battalion. He left Australia in November, 1915, on the 'Wellshird', ;anding in Suez on 15 December, 1915. After further training, he proceeded to Alexandria, where he joined the British Expeditionary Force. On 12 March, the 12th battalion left Alexandria for the Western Front. They disembarked at Marseilles on 19 March.
Here they were immediatey thrown in action. In May, Frank Llloyd was made Acting Bombardier. In July, they were part of the acion at Pozieres, followed by the Battles of Ypres and the Somme. On August 14, Frank Llloyd was wounded in action. His left leg was severely wounded and he was taken to the 13th Field Ambulance Station, where he died the next day. At the inquiry into his death, Lieutenant Colonel Vincent Welch stated: 'He died in our hospital on 15 August from shattered left leg which wound he received on the 14th. He was buried on 15th August by a C of E chaplain at the Soldiers' Cemetery Worloy Baillon.'

Franklin Llloyd is remembered in the Australian War Memorial Roll of Honour cards 1914-18 War and on Panel 17 in the Commemorative Area.
