Biographical notes: 
  • Enlisted on the 10th October 1914 aged 24 years.  Previously his occupation was a Tailor's Cutter
  • Commenced training with the 14th Battalion at Broadmeadows Camp before embarkation on the 22nd December 1914
  • Suffered numerous illnesses and sent to Malta and then to St George's Hospital in England to recover from 'nervous debility'
  • On the 23rd January 1916 after being promoted, reverted to the ranks at his own request
  • Transferred to Egypt on the 2nd April 1916 to join the 14th Battalion Headquarters
  • During 1916 and 1917 served in France and suffered further illnesses and on the 8th February 1918 was wounded by gas
  • During August and September was charged it various disciplinary offenses and on the 9th October 1918 was Court Martialled and received 6 months hard labour
  • Returned to Australia on the 14th December 1918 and discharged on the 30th March 1919
