Biographical notes:

John Henry Farley, a 36 year old railway employee, enlisted on 8/9/1914. He was then a railway employee and a widower.  The next day, he married Clara Elizabeth Turton, the Rev. W.S. Rollands conducting the ceremony at Toorak, probably st St. John's, as Farley records his religion as Church of England. He was  assigned to the 6th Battalion and on 13/5/1915, was incorrectly reported as killed in action at Gallipoli. The next day, he was admitted to the hospital ship, the Guildford Castle, with a complex fracture of the humerus. On 7/6/1915, he was transferred to hospital at Port Said and then returned to Australia via the troopship Ballarat. After a further operation, he was discharged and awarded a disability pension, of 45/-, later increased to 60/- because of his disabilty. He died on 21/2/1918 from his war wounds.

An obituary in the Wodonga and Toowong Times of 1 March,1918, read in part:

'It is with much regret that we announce the death of Mr. John Henry Farley, which sad event happened at late residence, Gibson St., Alphington. The deceased, who was a native of Maldon. was a returned Anzac hero, where he played a gallant part.'
