DUNNING, Charles Hamilton
Charles Dunning was born at Liverpool England in November 1891.
He enlisted in the AIF on the 20 August 1914 at Albert Park Melbourne Vic. He lists himself as a Law Clerk, 23 years old and single. He is a small man 5'' 3' tall and weighing just 9 stone. He was living at 104 Powlett street in East Melbourne Victoria on enlistment.
He was allocated to the 2nd Field Artillery, 6th Battery, however it appears that he spent the first 12 months in the AIF as a Batman. He was in Gallipoli by September 1915 however due a number of illnesses he spends little time at Anzac Cove and has two spells in hospital at Lemnos in September and November 1915. By January 1916 he was in Cario and allocated to Guard Duty at Australian Head Quarters.
He was in France by May 1916 and seems to have spent most of the time in various hospital with numerous complaints. He was listed as wounded in Action in January 1917 with a gun shot wound to his right knee. He spends many months in hospitals in 1917 and is allocated to No 1 Command depot on the 30 November 1917.
He complaints that he can't stand due to his wounded knee and spends more time in hospital during the first half of 1918. In September 1918 the Medical Board declare him permanently unfit for all duties and in January 1919 he was detached from all duty pending his return to Australia.
Charles is admitted to the Westmead Road Aux. Hospital in Liverpool on the 4 February 1919 and he died at this hospital on the 21 February 1919. Cause of death is listed as Nephritis and Hepatitis.
Charles was given a full military funeral and was buried at the Ashfield Park Cemetery in Liverpool on the 28 February 1919. Grave site 580 section 1
