CARMODY, John Patrick
John Patrick Carmody was born on 19 January, 1890 in Carlton to John Joseph Carmody and Elizabeth Culhane who was born in Limerick Ireland. His sister Jane Marguerite was born in 1895 in Carlton.
At the time of enlistment on 15 october, 1917, John was working as an Electrician having married Mary Jane Falkingham in 1914 in Victoria. He joined th AFC at Laverton as a 2nd Class Air Mechanic and by late November 1917 he embarked on the HMT Indarra arriving in Suez on 27 December. He was at Camp A Gabarri near Alexandra for 2 months, then embarked early February 1918 on the HMT Abassiah to Taranto, then Cherbourg, finally arriving on the HMT Prince George at Southhampton mid February. In December 1917 he was promoted to Acting Lance Corporal.
Arriving in the UK he joined the AFC Training Depot at Wendover, moving to the AFC 6th Training Squadron at Minchinhampton by May 1919. On 11 May 1919 he embarked on the Kaisar-i-hind when he was promoted to Flight Squadron Education as service during the voyage home.
After the war, by 1929 John had established Carmody Elctrical Engineering Co at 573 Botany Road, Waterloo, NSW. We know from correspondence in his service record that he was still a resident in Sydney in 1940, however had returned to Melbourne at some stage before his death at Heidelberg on 1 September, 1955.
