BROBERG, Carl Albert
Carl Albert Broberg was born in Richmond, Victoria on 2nd November to Carl Niels Johann Broberg and Eda Margaret Broberg (nee Frees). Carl Senior was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, attending the Grammar School in Copenhagen before qualifying as a Manufacturing Chemist. He came to Melbourne in July 1890 to join Rocke, Tompsitt & Co, where he remained for 12 years. He returned to Denmark to marry Eda Margaret Frees in 1894. They proceeded to have four sons, Carl junior being the eldest. In 1903 they returned to Denmark for 2 years with their family. Prior to this they had been living at 65 Victoria Street, Collingwood. After their return from Denmark in 1904 Carl Senior became Director and General Manager of Barrett Drug Co Pty Ltd, a chemical manufacturing company, headquartered in 534 Little Collins Street. There are records to show that one son Arthur attended Christian Brother's College, East Melbourne, where his other brothers may have been schooled as well.
By 1914 the family had moved to 204 Albert Street. Around this time Eda Broberg opened 'Eda Broberg's Private Hospital' at 201 Albert Street, East Melbourne. After Carl left school he became an apprentice chemist with J. W. Black pharmacy in Collingwood fom 1913 to 1918. At the time of enlistment on 31st January, 1918, Carl is single living with his father at the above address. He joined the Australian Medical Corps and was at Semour military Camp from 4 July 1918 to 19 August 1918,then spent time at Point Nepean. He embarked from Melbourne on the SS Zealandia on 5th October 1918, disembarking in London on 5 December 1918, reporting for duty at the 4th Group General Hospital, Codford UK on 13 January 1919. Two days later he was admitted to the 1st AGH at Sutton Veney with influenza. On 11 March he was discharged to the AAMC Training Depot in Fovant, UK. On 4th April, 1919 he was moved to the Bulford Hospital where he reamined until 17 December 1919 when he returned to AIF Headquarters. He embarked for Australia from London on 15th July 1920 on the 'Kigoma", being discharged when back in Melbourne on the 14th August, 1920.
On his return Carl moved to Bairnsdale to establish a pharmacy at 140 Main Street. He met and married Joan Alice Tipping who came form Bairnsdale. They married at St Bede's Church, Elwood on 9th May 1923. They had 3 children, Margaret, Bill and David. The family were living at 216 Main Street when Carl passed away on 9 May, 1935. He was buried in the Catholic section of the Bairnsdale Cemetery leaving a substantial estate of 14,000 pounds to his widow.
