Harold was born in Halifax Nova Scotia on the 13 November 1881. He enlisted in Melbourne on 6 December 1917 as a private. He was allocated to the 57 Battalion, 10th reinforcements.

On enlistment he lists his occupation as a 'rubber worker', he is 36 years old, 5'8'' tall, and married. His wife was living in California USA.

He embarked on the 28 Feb 1918 on the HMAS Nestor[A71] from Melbourne and appears to have had a difficult army career. He was promoted to Acting Corporal for several months, July- October 1918. He was  then demoted back  to a private from October to December 1918. He has a similar experience in 1919 when he was promoted to Temporary Sergeant for several days and then back to private which was the rank he was listed as when he was discharged in England on the 23 April 1919.

Harold missed the war. He was based in the UK until October 1918 and was based in France for seval months after the war had ended.

There is no record of him returning to Australia and in 1922 he was listed as living in Pretoria South Africa.
