Amendment C162 to the City of Melbourne Municiple Strategic Statement. The proposal was released in July 2010 and is open for public submissions until 3 September 2010. Over the last two decades, central Melbourne has transformed from being a commercial downtown area to a thriving, multi-functional, 24–hour metropolitan centre. Today, around 790,000 people use the city every day; with more than one million daily users expected by 2030. The central city is still a prime destination for work, but more people are also making it their home or place to visit. People live throughout the municipality – not only in the established inner city suburbs, but also in the newly developed areas of Docklands and Southbank, and in the heart of the central city too. Achieving the vision The City of Melbourne’s goal is to give everyone the best possible experience of the city; and our responsibility is to plan for the city’s growth and development while maintaining a balance between competing interests. The new Municipal Strategic Statement (MSS) sets out a long-term vision and strategy for the growth and development of the municipality to ensure our city is well designed and managed and continues to be a great place to live, work and visit. What is the MSS and Amendment C162? The City of Melbourne manages the municipality’s land use and development through the Melbourne Planning Scheme, of which the MSS is a part. The MSS sets the high level strategic direction for all the controls in the planning scheme. Planning Scheme Amendment C162 is the legal way the City of Melbourne will include the new MSS into the Melbourne Planning Scheme. Submissions are carefully considered in shaping the final version of the MSS. Key directions The key directions in the new MSS are: planning for growth, a well-connected and accessible city, new buildings to complement public places and spaces, creating an 'eco-city' and land use choices.
