About the East Melbourne Historical Society

Purposes

1. To encourage the study of Australian, Victorian and local history.
2. To collect and record East Melbourne's history.
3. To collect, preserve and disseminate historical documents and memorabilia (including photographs and artefacts of East Melbourne).
4. To promote interchange of information among members of the Society by lectures, readings, discussions, excursions and exhibitions of objects of historical significance.
5. To promote heritage preservation.
6. To exchange information and cooperate with other historical societies through membership of the Royal Historical Society of Victoria and other bodies in related fields of conservation, genealogy and museum management.
7. To accept gifts of monies or chattels whether testamentary or otherwise and if necessary or advisable to perform execute or adopt any conditions or trusts attached to such gifts.
8. To conduct the affairs of the Society in such a way that it has a continuing existence and is financially viable.

Membership

Membership of the East Melbourne Historical Society is open to all who are interested in the history of East Melbourne.

Annual subscription: $30.00
Non-members are welcome at individual meetings. A fee may be charged.

Rules

During 2017 the Rules of the Society were amended according to the Act. They were passed at the 2017 Annual General Meeting and subsequently approved by the relevant Authority.

Activities

The Society meets at 7.30pm on the third Wednesday of even numbered months. The venue is usually the East Melbourne Library. The AGM is held at the October meeting.

If restrictions on gatherings are in place (eg, covid-19), meetings may be held via Zoom or other electronic means.

Collection

The Society maintains a collection of items relevant to the history of East Melbourne. Members and visitors are welcome to peruse the Catalogue. Items which are not yet online may be viewed by arrangement. (Contact)  

Donations to the collection are very welcome. By donating items, donors grant publication rights to the Society.

Publications

The Society publishes regular newsletters, occasional booklets and the EMHS website. The website is archived periodically by PANDORA, a web archive operated by the State Library of Victoria and the National Library of Australia.

Beginnings

The East Melbourne Historical Society was founded in 1999 by two neighbouring historians, Dr. Anne Colman and Dr. Liz Rushen. The East Melbourne Group, the local residents' action group, supported the foundation of an historical society and provided initial funding to set it up. Now, as well as collecting reference material, the society holds regular talks on a variety of topics relating to the history of East Melbourne and Jolimont. It publishes a small newsletter three times a year which lets members know of coming events as well as providing short articles of a historical nature. Contributions to the newsletter are welcomed.
