Subject description: 

Site is in lane off Hotham Street (formerly Fitzroy Street). Stewart later built and owned Cyprus Terrace in front.
1853. MCC BR: Thomas W. Stewart, of Collingwood, to build house for self.
1862-69. Directory shows as 5? Hotham Street.
1870. H.W. Stewart - owner/occupier. Off Powlett Street, brick 4 rooms.
1873. Directory shows No.38a Powlett Street. Access to the rear of Cyprus Terrace may have been via lane off Powlett Street.
Card 3:
"If the present house is partly original, it is probably the oldest private residence in East Melbourne. The next one, the bluestone house at 115 Grey Street, was started in December 1853."
